Questions for Your Book Club

 

  1. What is the significance of the book's title?

  2. Who is your favorite character and how do they transform throughout the book?

  3. The setting shifts between Toronto, Guatemala and Cape Breton, how do these places impact Warren's transformation?

  4. In telling the story, the author doesn't follow a strict linear time structure but infuses the storytelling with a Maya understanding of the cyclical or circular concept of time. How does this impact the story?

  5. What is the meaning of solidarity? How have you witnessed solidarity in your life? How do the character's each interpret solidarity differently?

  6. What do you think of the book's ending? Does it satisfy you? Why or why not?

  7. How does what happens to Petra affect Meena? What do you think happened to her?

  8. What do you feel is the interplay between fiction and real life?

  9. Do you think corporations and mining companies have a social and ecological responsibility to the communities where they operate? Why are or why not?
